ブルガリアの医科大学で生活を始めて、約3ヶ月が経過しました。

It's been about three months since I started living and studying at a medical university in Bulgaria.

東欧への留学や移住を考えている方が一番気になるのは、「実際のところ、生活費はいくらかかるのか？」「治安は悪くないのか？」という点だと思います。ネット上には「物価が安い」という情報が溢れていますが、実際に生活してみると、想像とは違うリアルな現実が見えてきました。

If you're considering studying or living in Eastern Europe, your biggest questions are probably: "How much does it actually cost?" and "Is it safe?" The internet is full of "Bulgaria is so cheap!" claims — but after actually living here, reality paints a different picture.

今回は、33歳の医学生（元ITエンジニア）である私が実際に支払っている1ヶ月の生活費と、現地の治安について包み隠さず公開します。

In this post, I — a 33-year-old medical student and former IT engineer — will share my actual monthly expenses and honest safety assessment, with nothing held back.

1. 生活費のリアル：家賃とインフラ事情

Real Living Costs: Rent & Infrastructure

まずは固定費からです。結論から言うと、求める生活レベルによってコストは激変します。

Let's start with the fixed costs. The bottom line: your expenses vary dramatically depending on the lifestyle you want.

家賃：約600ユーロ（約98,000円） / Rent: ~€600

私が住んでいるのは、築10年以内の近代的で綺麗な2LDKのアパートです。このクラスの物件に住みたい場合、これくらいが相場になります。

I live in a modern, well-maintained 2-bedroom apartment built within the last 10 years. If you want this level of quality, expect to pay around this much.

ただし、ブルガリアの不動産事情で注意すべき点があります。**「同じ家賃でも、建物が古かったり部屋が極端に狭かったりする」**ということです。ネットの写真だけを信じず、必ず現地の不動産エージェントにオンラインビデオ通話をお願いし、リアルタイムで部屋の中を見せてもらってから決めることを強くおすすめします。

One crucial warning about Bulgarian real estate: the same rent can get you vastly different quality. Some places look great in photos but are old or tiny in person. Always ask the local real estate agent for a live video call to see the apartment in real-time before committing.

水道・光熱費：約56ユーロ（3月実績） / Utilities: ~€56

3月の実績ですが、この時期は暖房をほとんど使っていなかったため、比較的安く収まっています。冬場はもっと高くなると予想されます。

This was my March bill, when I barely used heating. Expect this to be higher during the cold winter months.

通信費（インターネット・携帯） / Internet & Mobile

通信環境はITエンジニア出身の私にとっても非常に快適です。

As a former IT engineer, I can say the connectivity here is surprisingly excellent.

  • 光回線（1Gbps）：現地プロバイダ「Sprint」で月額約31ユーロ。私の場合は大家さんが負担してくれています。

  • 携帯回線：大手キャリア「A1」や「Vivacom」があり、例えばA1なら携帯回線＋ケーブルテレビ＋ホームWi-Fiのセットで月額25ユーロで契約可能。

  • Fiber optic (1 Gbps): About €31/month through a local ISP called "Sprint." My landlord covers this, but that's the typical price.

  • Mobile: Major carriers like "A1" and "Vivacom" offer bundles — A1 has mobile + cable TV + home Wi-Fi for €25/month.

通信インフラのコストパフォーマンスは非常に高いです。日本のような携帯料金に慣れている方は驚くかもしれません。

The value for money on telecom infrastructure is exceptional. If you're used to Japanese mobile rates, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2. 【反省】食費のリアルと「安さ」の罠

Food Expenses: The "Cheap" Trap (And My Regret)

「ブルガリアは物価が安い」と聞いて安心している方に、私の恥ずかしい現実を共有します。

For those who feel reassured by "Bulgaria is cheap" — let me share my embarrassing reality.

食費：1日約30ユーロ（月額約900ユーロ / 約14万円） / Food: ~€30/day (~€900/month)

医学部の課題に追われている現状、お恥ずかしながら私はまだ自炊の習慣が作れておらず、1日1〜2食を外食やデリバリーで済ませてしまっています。

Buried under medical school assignments, I'm embarrassed to admit I haven't developed a cooking routine yet. I've been eating out or ordering delivery for 1-2 meals a day.

ブルガリアは確かにスーパーの食材などは安いですが、外食を続けると日本と同じ、あるいはそれ以上の出費になります。

Yes, groceries at the supermarket are genuinely cheap. But if you keep eating out, you'll spend as much as — or even more than — you would in Japan.

これから留学を考えている方へのアドバイス： 「物価が安いから」と油断せず、自炊のスキルを身につけておくことを**真剣に（本当に真剣に）**おすすめします。日本にいるうちに、最低でも5〜6品のレパートリーを持っておくだけで、毎月の出費が数百ユーロ変わります。

My honest advice: Don't let the "cheap country" narrative make you complacent. Seriously (I mean seriously) learn to cook before you move. Having just 5-6 dishes in your repertoire could save you hundreds of euros every month.

3. 治安と「野良犬」の真実

Safety & The "Stray Dog" Myth

次に治安についてですが、結論から言えば**「日本と特に変わらないくらい安全」**に感じています。夜道を歩いていて危険を感じたことは今のところありません。

As for safety, my honest impression is that it feels about as safe as Japan. I haven't felt threatened walking the streets at night so far.

渡航前、日本の医療機関からは「予防接種をしていない野良犬が溢れているから、最低でも狂犬病ワクチンは接種した方がいい」と強く警告されました。決して安いワクチンではありませんでしたが、念のため接種して渡航しました。

Before departure, Japanese medical professionals strongly warned me: "There are unvaccinated stray dogs everywhere — you should at least get the rabies vaccine." It wasn't cheap, but I got vaccinated just to be safe.

しかし、実際に3ヶ月住んでみて、野良犬に噛まれるどころか、脅威を感じたことは一度もありません。

But after three months of living here, I haven't been bitten — or even felt remotely threatened by a stray dog.

もちろん油断は禁物ですし、ワクチンの接種自体は安心材料になりますが、少し拍子抜けしたのが本音です。日本で流れている「東欧は危険」というイメージは、少なくともこの街に関しては、かなり誇張されていると感じます。

Of course, you shouldn't let your guard down, and the vaccine does provide peace of mind. But honestly, I was a bit underwhelmed by the "danger." The image of "Eastern Europe is dangerous" that persists in Japan is, at least for this city, considerably exaggerated.

4. 海外サバイバルのための必須ツール

Essential Tools for Living Abroad

物理的な治安は良いですが、海外生活において**「お金の管理」と「デジタル面でのセキュリティ」**は自分自身で守る必要があります。私が渡航前から準備し、実際に今も現地で重宝しているツールを2つ紹介します。

Physical safety is good here, but when living abroad, you need to actively protect your financial management and digital security. Here are two tools I set up before departure that I still rely on daily.

① 海外送金・決済の最適解：Wise（ワイズ）

日本の銀行からブルガリアの口座へ直接送金すると、多額の手数料と悪い為替レートで資金が目減りします。私は生活費の送金や日常の決済に、為替手数料が圧倒的に安いWiseを活用しています。

Sending money directly from a Japanese bank to a Bulgarian account means hefty fees and terrible exchange rates. I use Wise for transferring living expenses and everyday payments — the exchange fees are dramatically lower.

これから海外へ行くなら、日本にいるうちに絶対にアカウントを作っておくべき必須インフラです。マルチカレンシーのデビットカードも発行でき、ブルガリアのレフでもユーロでも、現地でそのまま支払いに使えます。

② デジタル防弾チョッキ：VPNサービス

現地のカフェや大学のフリーWi-Fiは、通信が暗号化されていないことが多く、パスワードやクレジットカード情報を抜き取られるリスク（中間者攻撃）があります。

Free Wi-Fi at local cafes and the university is often unencrypted, putting your passwords and credit card info at risk of interception (man-in-the-middle attacks).

また、海外のIPアドレスだとTVerやAmazonプライムなど、日本の動画サービスや銀行アプリが弾かれてアクセスできません。

On top of that, with a foreign IP address, Japanese streaming services like TVer, Amazon Prime Video, and even some banking apps will block your access.

If you cook at home, food costs could drop to €300-400. That would bring the monthly total down to around €1,000 (~¥163,000).

6. まとめ：生活のハードルより、本当の壁は「言葉」

自炊さえしっかりすればコストを抑えられ、治安も良く、インフラも整っている——ブルガリアは非常に住みやすい環境です。

If you learn to cook, keep your costs down, and enjoy good safety and solid infrastructure — Bulgaria is a very livable place.

生活のハードルは決して高くありません。しかし、医学生としてこの環境でサバイバルするための**「本当の壁」は、間違いなく英語でのコミュニケーション能力**です。

The barrier to daily life isn't high. But the real wall for surviving as a medical student here is undoubtedly English communication skills.
